چکیده

This study examines the relationship between salary distribution and performance using the four most recent completed seasons of the National Hockey League (NHL). The first approach pursues the effect of salary inequality on team performance using end-of-season team outcomes. The second approach focuses on the relationships between salary inequality and the distribution of individual performance and of teamwork by exploiting the incentive tradeoffs amongst linemen on a given team. Both approaches offer a unified view of a positive relationship between salary inequality and performance, which is driven by a star effect in the upper-half of the salary distribution, rather than by a journeyman effect in the lower-half. Thus, buying a key player (superstar) at a high salary produces good results according to the measures of performance.

While this relative age effect (RAE) has been well-established in junior hockey and other professional sports, the long-term impact of this...

A Markov Game Model for Valuing Player Actions in Ice Hockey

A variety of advanced statistics are used to evaluate player actions in the National Hockey League, but they fail to account for the context in which an action occurs or to look ahead to the long-term effects of an action. We apply the Markov Game formalism to develop a novel approach to valuing player actions in ice hockey that incorporates context and lookahead. Dynamic programming is used to...
